'Upadesha' (discourse) of Shankaracharya Swami Brahmanand
Saraswati,
Shankaracharya of Jyotirmath (1941-1953)
Always
be on the Lap of Bhagwan
(from
'Shri
Shankaracharya Vaksudha')
[It
is recorded that in Delhi, after the Shatamukha Koti Homatmaka
Mahayagya of 1943 {1944?}, at the time of the great festival of
Shivaratri, in the tent colony there, a discourse was given in
'Bhagiratha Palace' of which this is an extract.]
'If you think of Bhagwan (God) as being distant from oneself
then He will be very far away, but if you appreciate He is near and upaasanaa (devotion)
to Him will to go to Him, then He will remain always near by. In the
manner a
woman carries water on the head by putting the pitcher there with one
hand, with the other hand [staying] free to take her own child, and
when she raises her
child up with her foot then with the empty hand she raises him higher.
In this manner Bhagwan has been doing the work of the whole world, is
always available to raise His own child devotee. Having been crying is
to delay in clinging on to His feet, He himself benefits you by holding
you up and
lifting you and causing you to sit in His own lap. Have faith and from
the city of the heart make a prayer to Him; He is always with you, is
truly within you; it is not necessary to seach anywhere far away; only
understand that as long as you do a little period of a kind of upaasanaa, automatically you will
be connected to experience and that at all times
will be possessed of limitless strength, wealth of bliss consciousness
- be on
the lap of Bhagwan in the form of aananda (bliss)!'
